Filmed in eight countires across four continents, Elena Rossini‘s timely, acclaimed documentary takes a critical look at the global ‘beauty industrial complex’, which has turned the human body into ‘the finest consumer object’: “Multi-billion dollar industries saturate our lives with images of unattainable beauty, exporting body hatred from New York to Beirut to Tokyo. Their target? Women, and increasingly men and children.”
Her film takes its title from a line in that prescient Oscar winner Network, in which Howard Beale exhorts the audience of his TV show to realize that the media “deal in illusions” and laments that people are increasingly unable to tell what’s truly real, as they try to imitate the lives and images they see on TV. The Cube’s screening is presented by Adblock Bristol, who will host a short discussion.
