Just when you thought we’d had this year’s Melissa McCarthy comedy (Life of the Party, which slipped in and out of cinemas back in May), here she is again in a comedy that appears to rework the plot of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in the world of Ted.
It’s Brian (son of Jim) Henson‘s first feature as director since The Muppet Treasure Island back in 1996. Just don’t mention The Muppets or Sesame Street though, as The Happytime Murders was (unsuccessfully) sued by the latter’s producers over its tagline (“No sesame, all street”) because they claimed this adult comedy would harm their kiddie brand. McCarthy plays a former LAPD detective-turned-PI investigating a serial killer who seems to be targeting the puppet stars of ’80s TV series The Happytime Gang.
