Remember Overboard – the 1987 romantic comedy vehicle for real-life couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell? Of course you don’t. It was rubbish and something of a flop. The plot had Hawn as a rich bitch heiress who suffers from amnesia after tumbling from her luxury yacht. Macho, horny-handed carpenter Russell then convinces her that she’s his wife and sets her to work looking after his kids. Hilarious, huh?
Given that all movies, no matter how feeble, now have to be remade, it was only a matter of time before Overboard resurfaced. But even Tinseltown seems to have noticed that there’s something ever-so-slightly dodgy about that premise in the post-Weinstein world. The simple, all-purpose solution? Why, flip the genders and pass it off as a female empowerment yarn, obviously. So this time Mexican comedy star Eugenio Derbez is the billionaire playboy, while Anna Faris is cast as the working-class mother who exploits him.
