Brit first-time feature director Peter Mackie Burns reunites with Emily Beecham for what is effectively an expansion of his 2014 short film Happy Birthday to Me.
A London-set drama in which she’s rarely offscreen, this is quite a showcase for rising star Beecham’s talents. She plays liberated, cynical, half-Sicilian singleton Daphne Vitale, who enjoys a hedonistic life of casual sex, drunken late nights and recreational drugs. But with her 30th birthday looming, she witnesses a bloody act of random violence that sends her into a downward spiral. The Watershed’s preview screening on September 21 is part of the Shorts2Features strand of the Encounters festival.
