Cinema Rediscovered: Le Crime de Monsieur Lange

Director
Jean Renoir
Certificate
PG
Running Time
80 mins

Taking its cue from French left-wing politics of the 1930s Jean Renoir‘s satirical slice of ‘poetic realism’ has the workers taking over a pulp publishing house to run as a co-operative after the mysterious disappearance of its exploitative boss. But then he turns up again, eager the reap the fruits of their success.

“Of all Renoir’s films,” François Truffaut once wrote, “M. Lange is the most spontaneous, the richest in miracles of camerawork, the most full of pure beauty and truth. In short, it is a film touched by divine grace.” This 4K Cinema Rediscovered screening is part of the Bazin 100 strand.
