Writer/director Mike White‘s first feature behind the camera since 2007’s Year of the Dog is an acutely observed midlife crisis comedy.
Ben Stiller returns to Greenberg territory as the eponymous Brad: a competitive, dissatisfied middle-class fortysomething husband and father, who feels that he has achieved little in life in comparison to his successful and wealthy former college buddies: bestselling political pundit Craig (Michael Sheen), hedge fund gazillionaire Jason (Luke Wilson), Hollywood bigshot Nick (White) and tech tycoon Billy (Jemaine Clement). He’s also in grave danger of infecting his musical prodigy son with his many neuroses. Clearly, the danger here is that Brad could come across as a whiny, entitled bitch with a bunch of tiresome first-world problems. But White is too good a writer to stumble into that bloody great bear trap.
