Written by and starring Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs (of Hamilton fame), this OTT hip-hop buddy comedy certainly pushes all the right critical buttons by addressing issues of racism, police violence and gentrification in Oakland.
Diggs plays Collin, who has to stay out of trouble for just three more days to have his parole lifted, or face years in the slammer. Casal is his irresponsible and impulsive chum Miles, who leads him astray on a night of misbehaviour. When the two men witness a cop shooting a young black man, they face a major dilemma. This one delighted its core audience (hip-hop enthusiasts, mainly) when it was unveiled at Sundance, but received a more cautious welcome in other quarters. “Carlos Lopez Estrada’s debut feature brandishes brash exuberance and stilted storytelling tropes in roughly equal measure, yielding a result that stimulates just as it cheapens itself dramatically,” observed the Hollywood Reporter.
