Judy (Jane Fonda), Violet (Lily Tomlin) and Doralee (Dolly Parton) are a trio of office workers who are heartily sick of their leering, sexist, chauvinistic boss (Dabney Coleman) and decide to take revenge.
Based on an idea by Fonda herself and boasting Parton’s big-screen debut, this ahead-of-its-time 1980 workplace comedy addressed issues that are still being discussed today.
Mind you, it’s only fair to point out that this was not universally well received at the time. Possibly as part of its long tradition of being wrong about movies, Time Out sneered that it was “…flabby and bland…Complacent, and even worse, not very funny”. Today, 9 to 5 has been reclaimed as part of the BFI’s Comedy Genius season.
