Twin Iftar events to raise funds for Yemen and Sudan
The University of Bristol’s Student Union (Bristol SU) will host two Iftar events this week in the Anson Rooms of its Richmond Building, offering hundreds of students a space for reflection, celebration, and just giving to mark Ramadan.
For many students observing Ramadan, often far from home, these events offer an opportunity to partake in the tradition of Iftar, the breaking of the fast, while connecting with a welcoming and supportive community at the university.
In collaboration with Mercy Relief, Bristol Islamic Society will help raise vital funds for humanitarian efforts in Yemen and Sudan.

Funds raised at both events will be donated to the respective relief charities, reflecting the values of generosity associated with Ramadan.
A Bristol SU spokesperson stated that as part of its extensive events programme, Bristol SU is committed to ensuring “all students feel supported and included”.
“Facilitating these events with student groups is part of our ongoing efforts to create spaces where cultural and religious celebrations can thrive,” the spokesperson added.

Maryam Noura, from the Sudanese Society, said: “Iftar events like this create a home away from home, especially for students with families in Sudan, where the ongoing war has made Ramadan even more difficult. Sharing meals and prayers together helps us uphold traditions, find comfort in our community, and support one another through this month.”
“This year, our fundraising dinner will also include an auction featuring items from local businesses—from desserts and clothing to oud and perfume—all coming together to raise as much as we can for Sudan. I’m most looking forward to the Kunafa brownies from one of the dessert businesses!”
The events take place on Thursday and Friday. For more information on the Iftar events and fundraising efforts, contact ubu-marketing@bristol.ac.uk
