Maria, who is studying for a master’s in education, recalled the moment they received the news. She said: “We were on a date in Mexico City, celebrating our wedding when the email came through. We were thrilled.”
She added that studying abroad together had been a “game-changer.”
“It’s inspiring to have someone who believes in you, and who motivates you in everything you do,” she said.
Santiago, pursuing a master’s in computer science, shared his thoughts. He said: “We are experiencing this journey in another country, but we are together, and for me, that’s everything.”
The couple grew up just 220 miles apart in central Mexico. Both of their mothers worked at respected private schools to ensure their children had access to scholarships.
They met in 2019 in Mexico City, bonding over a shared desire to make an impactful change in the world.
Santiago had previously run a social enterprise that helped rural communities sell their products, and on their first date, he introduced Maria to the organisation’s work, instead of taking her on a fancy date.
The Think Big scholarship has been supporting talented students from around the world since 2017. With funding this year doubling to £6 million, each scholar is also enrolled in a leadership development programme. It is one of many scholarships offered by the University of Bristol.
Maria said: “Our families were incredibly proud of us because they knew how much effort we had put in.” Santiago added, “Our families’ support and encouragement were crucial in helping us get here.”
