New partnership to support emerging creative industries

By Milan Perera  Tuesday Apr 8, 2025

A new partnership between UWE Bristol and Bristol Creative Industries (BCI) is set to support Bristol’s burgeoning creative sector and emerging professionals at the start of their careers.

BCI is a leading UK membership organisation for businesses and freelancers in the creative industries, offering training, networking, and support for sector growth. With over 1,100 members, BCI’s collaboration with UWE Bristol sets to enhance student engagement.

With Bristol’s vibrant creative and cultural sector, the partnership will provide valuable insights and career opportunities for students studying creative industries courses such as marketing, events, filmmaking, photography, media, and communications.

As part of the partnership, current and recent students can join BCI for free, gaining access to speaker events, placements, employment opportunities, and career advice from industry leaders like Aardman, the Watershed and Bottle Yard Studios.

The collaboration will also benefit BCI members by helping to develop a network of fresh, newly minted professionals who are expected to shape the future workforce of the sector.

Lynn Barlow, assistant vice-chancellor for creative and cultural industries engagement at UWE Bristol, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for students and for Bristol’s creative industries as a whole.

“By supporting Bristol Creative Industries’ strong network of businesses and freelancers, we’re bringing fresh student talent into the sector. We’re proud to play a leading role in such an important organisation.

“At UWE Bristol, our programmes are designed with industry input to ensure that our students meet the needs of future employers and are work-ready. Our partnership with BCI further enhances this by offering students access to creative businesses of all sizes, providing invaluable industry insight and career opportunities.”

UWE Bristol and BCI officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the university’s Bower Ashton campus, committing both organisations to the development and support of BCI’s student membership offering.

Lis Anderson, co-chair of Bristol Creative Industries, said: “Talent and skills development is a top priority for our members, and this partnership will offer early access to emerging talent on a large scale.

“Building on strong connections with educational providers in the region, UWE Bristol’s broad range of programmes, and BCI’s network of employers, we aim to bridge the gap between education and industry, unlocking new opportunities and career pathways for students in the creative hub of Bristol.”
