Bristol pupil skips to beat food poverty

By Milan Perera  Monday Jun 30, 2025

A school pupil has taken on a skipping rope challenge to raise vital funds for a Bristol-based charity committed to tackling food poverty.

Meet Luna Stevens, who celebrated her 12th birthday recently. Wanting to mark the occasion with something more than pizza and presents, she decided to complete 1,000 skips a day for 30 days, totaling some 30,000 jumps, all to raise awareness of Bristol’s acute food poverty.

Luna’s attempt to shine a light on the crisis comes on the back of PwC/Demos’s 2024 Good Growth for Cities Index report, which ranked Bristol as the second prosperous city in the UK.

But this is a “Tale of Two Cities” scenario, as nearly 11,000 children of the city are registered for free school meals, about 20 per cent in total. A report published by the Parliament also pointed to the fact that in the 10 per cent most deprived wards, 17.2 per cent of households suffer moderate to severe food insecurity.

Luna hopes to raise awareness on the seriousness of the problem with her hopping feat done in a kangaroo costume.

The Clifton High School pupil set an original target of £1,000, and it currently stands at £1,138. Luna, although only 12 years old, is no novice to fundraising – this is her sixth campaign to raise funds for charity.

Previous campaigns include walking a six-mile stretch covering five foodbanks, from Emmaus Church Centre in Severn Beach to Emmanuel Chapel in Henbury, swimming the length of the English Channel in a swimming pool and jumping on her pogo stick every day for a month.

Luna said: “I’m skipping to help local families in need. Please support me and our food bank.”

All funds raised will go to Bristol North West Foodbank, which has supported more than 74,000 people in need since 2011.
