‘We’re not producing a fashion week that is about new clothing’

By Valentina Hernández Gómez  Wednesday Sep 21, 2022

The fashion industry has been one of the key areas where sustainability and climate issues have been put into focus.

Fast fashion, over-consumption and an increasing number of fashion weeks have made the industry a big contributor to carbon emissions, amounting up to ten per cent of total global emissions.

In the latest episode of our Behind the Headlines podcast, Bristol24/7’s Climate & Sustainability Editor Valentina Hernández Gómez talks with Amelia Twine, the founder and director of the Sustainable Fashion Week (SFW).

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

SFW is once again taking place in Bristol until Sunday, with events taking place across the city.

Amelia discussed her personal and professional background, with sustainability at the core of it all, saying: “It’s very easy to forget that everything we’re wearing comes from the ground in some way or another.”

Even if she’s been immersed in fashion for a long time, Amelia points out there’s still change to be made.

“As an industry, we’re so far behind in taking action and being aware of the harm it caused,” says Amelia.

“I wanted it to be the natural counterpart of London, Paris and New York fashion weeks.”

The SFW this year includes not only catwalks but also workshops and discussion panels, all around the four themes: Regenerate, Rewear, Repurpose & Reconnect.

“It’s about how we broadly reconnect with our relationship to fashion, exploring all the entry points to that,” adds Amelia.
