Sport teams to watch in Bristol

By Nicky Withers  Monday Oct 30, 2017

Football

Bristol is a city of two halves where football is concerned, so as a neutral you have a choice: League One Rovers at the Memorial Stadium or Championship side City at Ashton Gate. Women’s football is on the rise and ever-improving, with England being knocked out in the semi-final of the European Championships recently. Bristol City WFC play in the Women’s Super League 1, which is the highest division of women’s football, with their home ground based at the Stoke Gifford Stadium. They play against Chelsea Ladies on Saturday November 4th.

Rugby

Last season saw Bristol Ladies finish top of the Premiership for the first time in the club’s history and go through to the Grand Final, where they finished runners-up after being beaten by the Aylesford Bulls. Things have been a bit more mixed for the men’s team, after being relegated from the Premiership last year after just one season in the top flight, Bristol Rugby will play against Rotherham Titans on Saturday November 11th at Ashton Gate.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Basketball

As the condition of both the weather and our bank accounts deteriorate, a cheaper and indoor option is the basketball team- the Bristol Flyers. Tickets are £13 for under 25s and one pound less for under 22s, which is pretty good value to watch some high quality basketball in the BBL Championship. They play at the SGS WISE arena, not far from UWE’s Frenchay campus, meaning there’s plenty of buses going from the city centre.

There you have the main teams to watch in Bristol. However, if you don’t fancy any of those it’s worth checking out some other sports. The Jets play badminton whilst the Aztecs are the local American Football team. Wherever you look there’s great sporting action in Bristol.
