Pop-up skatepark opens in carpark

By Martin Booth  Saturday Oct 22, 2022

Skateboarding lessons, guest appearances by top skaters and a free-for-all jam competition are among the events happening as a carpark is transformed into a pop-up skatepark.

Skaters are replacing car drivers for just one week on the seventh floor of Cabot Circus car park.

On Saturday evening, the skaters could be heard long before they could be seen as they practised their tricks on a course consisting of modified parking blocks and double-sided curbs

The pop-up skatepark has been created by Bedminster-based skatepark designers and Canvas, with the pop-up being sponsored by Red Bull who will bring their Curb Kings contest to the space on October 29.

Partnering with Bristol City Council, the obstacles constructed by Canvas will be donated to and repurposed within Bristol skateparks following the end of the pop-up.

Another collaboration at the event is with Bris Girls Skate, who aim to encourage young women in the city to take up the sport.

Cabot Circus owners Hammerson say that they are “not afraid to do something different… and the skatepark proves this”.

“Carparks should be seen as multi-purpose spaces which can be transformed, bringing a new vibrancy and customer base,” said Hammerson chief development & asset repositioning officer, Harry Badham.

“Skateboarding has a phenomenal following and Bristol was the perfect city to test-bed this concept.”
