Steve Kirby new head coach at Bristol City Women

By Martin Booth  Thursday Sep 19, 2024

Steve Kirby has been appointed as Bristol City Women’s head coach, joining Ashton Gate from Women’s Super League side Leicester City.

Kirby, who was also previously assistant coach for Leicester’s men’s under-18s side, says that his goal is to get the Robins back to the top flight of women’s football after relegation last season.

“It is super exciting, and I am ready to kick on and try and get us back to the WSL,” 39-year-old Kirby said.

“I have watched both games so far and I have been impressed with the performances.

“It is a club which fits my style and how I like the game to be played. I hope we can now get us firing on all cylinders.”

City chairman Gavin Marshall added: “We are really pleased with the appointment of Steve.

“His coaching pedigree, his reputation in the game and his vision for taking this team to the next level really stood out during a thorough recruitment process.

“We also want to say a massive thank you to Loren Dykes and the staff for doing a great job of managing the team over the past three weeks.”

Kirby’s appointment comes after former head coach Lauren Smith resigned with less than a fortnight to go until the start of the Championship season, which has started with two draws against Birmingham City and Southampton.

Smith, who spent three threes at Bristol City, has since become the new head coach of England women’s under-19s.
