Lauren Smith leaves City just 12 days before start of new season

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Aug 27, 2024

Lauren Smith has resigned from her role as manager of Bristol City with less than a fortnight to go until the beginning of the Women’s Championship season.

Smith said that she is leaving Ashton Gate “with a very heavy heart” with an announcement expected soon of her new job.

Bristol City start their new campaign on September 8 with an away game against Southampton.

City Hall of Famer and former Wales international Loren Dykes will be taking on the role of interim head coach following Smith’s unexpected departure.

Smith was in charge of the Vixens since 2021, winning promotion to the Women’s Super League in 2023 and previously pledged her future to the club despite relegation after just one season in the top flight.

Smith said: “It is with a very heavy heart that I leave the club, a club that means so much to me, but the time is right for me to explore new opportunities.

“I want to thank all the staff and players that I have worked with over the years for their support and hard work on and off the pitch.

“I will always keep a keen eye on how City are doing and wish everyone well for the coming season.”

City Women chair, Gavin Marshall, added: “It is hard to put into words how much Lauren has given to Bristol City over the years.

“I thank her for her tireless hard work and commitment to the development of City Women. We are sad to see her go.”
