Lionesses roar to victory at Ashton Gate

By Milan Perera  Saturday Apr 5, 2025

The Lionesses’ triumphant return to Ashton Gate was marked by a goal-fest in front of a sold-out crowd.

Sarina Wiegman’s side triumphed over Belgium in the UEFA Women’s Nations League encounter, propelling them to the top of League A, Group 3, ahead of Spain and Portugal.

It was almost a replay of the Lionesses’ last visit to south Bristol back in 2023, where they put six past the same opposition.

Following two defeats at the hands of Spain and Portugal, Belgium were desperate for a win, but England women had other plans, dominating from the outset.

After Alessia Russo hit the woodwork early on, England opened their account with a no-look header from Lucy Bronze, following a long ball from Lauren James. Just before half-time, Millie Bright doubled the tally by converting a corner from Lucy Bronze.

It was a special night for former Bristol City player Aggie Beever-Jones, who scored her first-ever goal for England after coming on as a substitute, much to the delight of the Ashton Gate crowd. Beever-Jones had spent the 2022/2023 season on loan from Chelsea FC, where she scored five goals in 22 appearances. A perfect cross from Beth Mead was deftly dispatched into the back of the net.

Jess Park added a fourth in the 77th minute, making England’s position unassailable. However, the happiest player of the evening might have been Keira Walsh, who broke her goal drought by scoring her first-ever goal for the Lionesses after 83 appearances.

The record crowd of 23,202 were thoroughly entertained, and the Lionesses took their time to interact with the fans after the final whistle, which recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory.
