Kirby leaves Bristol City Women after only one season
Steve Kirby is no longer head coach at Bristol City Women following a disappointing end to the season.
Appointed in September on a two-year deal, Kirby had replaced interim head coach Loren Dykes, who had led City to sixth in the Women’s Championship league table.
But, despite hopes of promotion back to the top tier, City finished in their latest season in same position – 13 points behind champions London City Lionesses.
is needed now More than ever
The team won just one of their final eight games, with their only victory being a 3-0 win over Sheffield United who currently sit at the bottom of the league table.
The Robins were relegated from the Women’s Super League last season, picking up just one win and setting undesirable records including a 17-match winless streak.
Heavy defeats to Chelsea and Brighton – 8-0 and 6-2 respectively – marked a painful campaign.
In a statement, Bristol City Women chair Gavin Marshall said:
“We would like to thank Steve for his hard work and professionalism over the past seven months and wish him all the very best in his future career.
“Our priority is to now find the best candidate to push us forward for next season in WSL2.”
The second tier of the women’s game – previously known as the Women’s Championship – will be rebranded as Women’s Super League 2 from the 2025/26 season.
City’s new manager will be expected to mount a serious promotion challenge.
