Former England youth team player signs for Bristol Rovers

By Martin Booth  Monday Jul 8, 2024

A forward who played for England at under-16 level has become Bristol Rovers’ first summer signing.

Daisy Ackerman was in the Arsenal academy and has also been on the books at Bristol City, Oxford United and Cheltenham Town.

As a deadball specialist, 21-year-old Ackerman could well be stepping into the shoes of former Gas Girls captain Libby Bell who has surprisingly been released by the club.

Rovers will be playing in the National League for the first time from August.

The team have recently begun pre-season training at Lockleaze Sports Centre, with more new signings expected to be made from among the current triallists to further strengthen the squad.

Ackerman said: “My main goal is to add strength to the team and support my teammates in their progression as well.

“I know I am only 21, but I have already gained lots of experience from playing for England at youth level and being part of Arsenal Academy, along with playing at tier three clubs.

“I hope I can use that and apply it to my personal development but also to help my teammates. I want to play at the highest level I can, along with gaining my nursing degree along the way.”

Rovers manager Nathan Hallett-Young said that Ackerman “is a really exciting signing for us”.

He said: “On the pitch, we know she possesses an amazing threat going forward. Her technical play, control on the ball and distribution will be an amazing advantage, paired with her crossing ability which will really come into play this season…

“Daisy is a bright and bubbly person and we were really keen to get her involved. Just from initial conversations, she’s really excited about our project.

“The most important thing for us is the wealth of experience she has displayed at such a young age, and we are excited to see what she can bring to the club. Her knowledge will be invaluable.”
