City tame Pride Park for first time in eight years

By James Crawley  Tuesday Aug 20, 2019

Two first-half goals were enough to seal Bristol City their first win at Pride Park for eight years.

Former Derby man Andreas Weimann kept a cool head to finish from close range and Josh Brownhill pounced just before the break to give Lee Johnson’s men the half-time advantage.

The Rams pushed for a way back into the game but City dealt with everything thrown at them until Jack Marriott came off the bench to pick out the top corner late on.

It led to a tense finale but City keeper Daniel Bentley was in fine form to keep out a shot destined for the bottom-corner, in one of the last kicks of the game to keep the scoreline 2-1 to the Robins.

City’s last victory here came on April 20 2011 and it proved to be worth the wait.

Lee Johnson made just one change from the win over QPR, with Han-Noah Massengo making his first Championship start to replace Ádám Nagy who picked up a knock to his ankle during Saturday’s fixture at Ashton Gate in which he scored in a 2-0 win against QPR.

“It’s a new team and we have learnt a lot about our team today,” Johnson said. “We have learnt that we can cope without having the ball, still be dangerous on the counter, still set the press and win a game away from home against a very good team like Derby.”

“I’m absolutely delighted. It was a bit of a nail-biter in the last 10 minutes and I apologise for that… I think the fans enjoyed what was a very different performance today – it was one about guts and the boys defended like Trojans.”
