Cricketer takes catch on balcony of flats overlooking County Ground

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jul 10, 2025

A catch made in the crowd is always a special moment at a cricket match. A catch made on one of the balconies of the flats overlooking the County Ground is even more special.

That moment happened on Wednesday evening and it wasn’t a fan either with safe hands on a second-floor balcony but barefooted Gloucestershire squad member Zaman Akhter, who also managed to keep hold of his phone.

Taking the catch off a huge six hit by his Shire colleague D’Arcy Short, Akhter milked the celebrations, raising both of his arms in the air, applauded by a female friend on the balcony with him as well as a large proportion of the crowd – and later being thrown a Vitality Blast t-shirt for his troubles.

Akhter’s splendid catch and Short’s scintillating innings of 70 runs off 53 balls were among the few highlights for home fans on Wednesday evening as Gloucestershire never looked likely to match Surrey’s 193-7 and were 165-9 at the end of their 20 overs.

It brought to an end four wins on the bounce for Mark Alleyne’s men and was the last T20 match at Ashley Down’s Seat Unique Stadium this season, with the Cheltenham Cricket Festival taking place from July 17 to August 5.
