‘World first’ solar balloon under development
The world’s first solar-powered hot air balloon is underdevelopment in Bristol ahead of this year’s Balloon Fiesta.
Cameroon Balloons, in Bedminster, is stitching together the hybrid balloon which converts the sun’s rays into hot air using a special fabric.
The balloon will also have a traditional propane fuelled burner for take-off and landing, but will be partially heated by the special polyurethane-coated nylon.
is needed now More than ever
Work on the aircraft is expected to complete by late July to allow time for test inflations ahead of the St Austell Brewery Britsol International Balloon Fiesta on August 6-9.

The title sponsor for this year’s event was revealed at a prize draw and gala dinner at Cameroon Balloons in St John’s Street on Wednesday.
Development of the hybrid solar balloon has been funded by Bristol 2015, which delivers Green Capital events.
Andrew Garrad, chairman of Bristol 2015, said: “It feels extremely fitting that Bristol – the current Green Capital, and the home of ballooning – is now developing the world’s first hybrid solar-powered hot air balloon.
“I am very much looking forward to celebrating its maiden voyage in August and hope that this project will inspire many more firsts for Bristol.”
