Winning designs chosen for Redcliffe scheme
Plans which could help put St Mary Redcliffe in the centre of a new “urban village” have been announced.
Designs for a new £12-£15 million visitors centre with cafe and exhibition space were chosen through a competition launched by the church in November last year.
The development will form part of a wider regeneration of Redcliffe Way under the Redcliffe Neighbourhood Development Plan.
The winning plans were put forward by Purcell, an architects firm based in King Street. They show a network of new buildings, some with grass roofs, encircling the church.
Built, and then re-built, over a 300-year period from the early 13th century to the 15th century, St Mary Redcliffe Church was once described by Elizabeth I as “the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England”.
