Water cascades onto station platforms after downpour

By Karen Johnson  Friday Sep 6, 2024

An overflowing gutter caused rainwater to gush onto a platform at Temple Meads.

After the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for the Bristol area on Friday, platform seven at the railway station got rather damp.

Network Rail apologised to passengers and said that no train services were affected.

Thomas Daw, who took a video of the scenes, told Bristol24/7: “The rain waste pipe basically just buckled in the ceiling above and it all came pouring out. The same happened again 2 minutes later down the platform.

“Not sure if this is the new bit of the roof they were meant to have fixed or old but very wet.”

Daw appealed to bring back British Rail.

He tweeted: “Almost £100 I’ve spent for a return trip to Manchester this weekend (with a Young person’s Railcard)

“While in temple meads I’ve witnessed the ceiling collapse and poor water onto the platform.TWICE!

“WHERES MY MONEY GOING? because its not on upkeep.

“Bring back British Rail!”

In another video shared by Daw, who was heading to Manchester for the Green Party conference, a similar set of massive leaks can be seen on platform seven of the station.

In a statement, a Network Rail spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to any passengers who were affected by the water leak from an overflowing gutter which lasted for a few minutes on Platform 7 at Bristol Temple Meads station earlier today.

“The sheer volume of exceptional rainfall that fell over a short period in the Bristol area meant that the guttering was temporarily unable to cope.

“Train services were not disrupted by the incident and our team was on site to resolve the problem.”
