Two protests take place on College Green at same time
Two protests took place simultaneously on College Green on Saturday next to each fountain on either side of City Hall.
On one side were Guiders Against Trans Exclusion (GATE), made up of people involved with Girlguiding who do not agree with their decision to exclude trans girls.
The group call themselves “a collective of members, volunteers, parents and allies who want to make it clear that trans girls belong in Girlguiding and that this decision was wrong”.

GATE say “it is clear that Girlguiding made this decision in response to legal pressure; however, we still believe that it was the wrong decision to make and that we must stand up and speak out against this injustice” – photo: Rob Browne
And on the other side were campaigners from Mothers’ Manifesto (some of who were beginning a day-long hunger strike) and Temwa, who were calling “for urgent action on climate justice, global inequality, and the protection of vulnerable communities already experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change”.
Temwa director, Jo Hook, said: “Communities in northern Malawi are already living with the consequences of a climate crisis they did not cause. We are gathering on College Green to stand in solidarity with mothers everywhere who want a safe, fair future for their children.”
