Two NHS trusts move closer to merger

By Martin Booth  Friday Jul 18, 2025

The merger of two NHS trusts looks likely to create a single organisation employing more than 28,000 people across the Bristol area.

University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust and North Bristol NHS Trust look set to merge following a joint Bristol NHS Group running the two already having been set up in April.

UHBW is already a merger of two former trusts, responsible for hospitals including the BRI, St Michael’s and the Children’s Hospital; while NBT runs Southmead, Cossham and more.

Bristol NHS Group chief exec, Maria Kane, said “a future merger between our two high-performing trusts is a natural next step”.

Kane said: “This move is in direct response to strong clinical feedback, operational lessons learned and the priorities set out in the government’s ten-year plan for the NHS.

“We believe we can go further, faster, in delivering these benefits by becoming a single organisation.”
