‘Selfie wall’ tells story of historic Temple Quarter

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Aug 15, 2018

From dinosaurs to spaceships, the story of the changing Temple Quarter district from the distant past through to the future has been told in a temporary exhibit on Cattle Market Road.

The so-called ‘selfie wall’, telling the ‘Temple Quarter Story’, on hoardings around the former sorting office near Temple Meads aims to brighten up the derelict site and breathe new life into the area while building work is underway.

What was once medieval pasture land will in the next few years be transformed into the University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

The artwork has been created by Upfest on behalf of Bristol City Council in partnership with Out of Hand, the university and site clearance contractor Kier.

To encourage people to visit the installation the council has teamed up with local businesses to run a competition throughout August. Anyone who takes a photo of themselves in front of the selfie wall and shares it on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #TempleQuarterStory will have the chance to win prizes from roast dinner for two to a year’s worth of coffee.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said: “What we’re trying to say with the selfie wall is that everyone can be part of the ‘Temple Quarter Story’ and share in the amazing creativity and vibrancy of this new city district.

“It’s a bit of a fun and clearly there’s some artistic licence in the storytelling but there’s a serious message behind it: the Temple Quarter is open to everyone – come and get involved.”

Work on the clearance of the sorting office site continues, with  the derelict Cattle Market Tavern pub raised to the ground in May and contractors continuing with enabling works in preparation for the demolition of the main sorting office building in the coming months.
