Surfers sick of sewage hold paddle-out protest to demand change

By Martin Booth  Saturday May 17, 2025

A paddle-out protest took place in the Floating Harbour to draw attention to water companies dumping untreated raw sewage into waterways across the UK.

The dozens of people taking part began the protest by entering the docks at Baltic Wharf next to the Cottage pub.

“Our sewage system is antiquated, and the system is well and truly broken,” said a statement from protest organisers Surfers Against Sewage.

“The polluting practices of water companies, the poor monitoring and regulation from the environmental regulators and not enough action from the government has led to people continuing to get sick across the UK and our waterways continuing to be polluted.

“We want an end to sewage pollution and changes within industry that put people and the planet first.

“We are more than surfers, more than sewage. We’re calling all water lovers across the UK to join us at lakes, beaches and rivers to shout from the shores or paddle out.

“People from all corners of the nation must come together to show the polluters the tidal wave of support there is backing an end to sewage pollution.”
