Southmead Hospital pioneers scheme to help parents of premature babies

A pioneering new scheme that seeks to ease the transition from hospital to home for the parents of premature and ill babies is being funded by Southmead Hospital Charity.

From September 2017, boxes storing medicines will be mounted on the walls next to premature babies’ cots so parents at Southmead Hospital can learn how to administer the drugs themselves at home prior to their baby being discharged.

This gives parents up to a two-week head start, rather than being shown how to administer drugs on the day of discharge.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit matron Michelle Jackson said: “Enabling parents to learn how to draw up medications well in advance of going home will give them the confidence to do it themselves.

“By doing this, we are working towards a family integrated care approach, where parents do as much as possible for their babies in preparation for going home.”
