Short story on Radio 4 inspired by Horfield Leisure Centre

By Martin Booth  Thursday Apr 23, 2026

When author Emily Koch featured in Bristol24/7’s My Bristol Favourites in 2023, the swimming pool at Horfield Leisure Centre was among her choices.

Now that same pool features in a new short story by Koch that is due to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

Lane Seven will be part of the Short Works slot on May 22, focusing on swimmer Jack who is unsettled when he sees his ex-girlfriend in the next lane despite having told him she was scared of water.

Koch, who lives in Bishopston, swims twice a week at Horfield Leisure Centre where she says her writer’s brain “goes into overdrive”.

The author and former journalist, who is currently finishing her fourth novel, said: “There are so many people to observe and imagine stories for.

“I’ve been wanting to write one of them for a long time…

“I was commissioned by producers at BBC Radio 4 in Bristol, so this feels like a very Bristol story.

“We’re currently casting the actor and I can’t wait to hear it brought to life.”
