School strike averted by last-minute talks

A teacher strike at Kingswood’s John Cabot Academy planned for Tuesday has been averted after last-ditch negotiations.

The school announced on Monday that the walk-out had been suspended following talks with unions which had been going on for a week.

Teachers planned to strike at the South Gloucestershire school over heavy workloads and changes to their working conditions.

A statement from the school said: “John Cabot Academy is extremely pleased to be able to report that, following further talks today, the strike action originally planned for Tuesday, January 12, has been suspended by the NUT and NASUWT unions.

“This means that the Academy will be open as usual tomorrow and, furthermore, there are no further days of strike planned.

“The Academy has agreed to continue to work to address the issues raised by staff via their unions and we are confident that these will be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties over the coming weeks.”

Teachers had planned two further strikes in the coming weeks. Teachers walked out in strikes at Winterbourne International Academy last year over issues with the senior management team. Beverley Martin, chief executive principal, left the school shortly after.
