School holiday support programme for children in need to return
A Bristol community organisation has stepped up for another year to support children facing hardship during the school holidays through a structured programme.
Community of Purpose, based in Keynsham, runs Break Free – a holiday initiative for children and young people who receive free school meals, offering safe and welcoming spaces when school is closed.
While holidays are often associated with freedom and family time, for some children they can bring isolation, anxiety, hunger and a loss of routine.
Break Free aims to address some of the issue by providing nutritious meals alongside activities that help build confidence and allow young people to simply enjoy being children.

The programme is rooted in the belief that no child in Bristol should feel left behind when school closes.
Amy Kington, founder of Community of Purpose, said: “For some of the children we work with, the school holidays can be the most difficult time of the year.
“Break Free is about more than provision. It’s about giving young people a sense of belonging, fun, encouragement and positive experiences that build confidence and self-worth.”

For many young people, the holidays can be a challenging time.

It is estimated that 3 million children in the UK are at risk of going hungry during school breaks without support.
While exact figures may vary, Bristol mirrors the national trend, with thousands of children eligible for free school meals.
Break Free is about making sure they feel supported, included and able to enjoy being children.
The Keynsham-based charity is currently looking to connect with individuals and businesses who would be interested in getting involved.
Support can take many forms, from volunteering time and sharing skills to offering practical help, resources or experiences that can enrich holiday sessions.

Whether helping to serve meals, leading workshops or supporting activities behind the scenes, organisers say every contribution can make a lasting difference.
