Refugee donations halted in Bristol
Drop-off points in Bristol for donations to refugees and migrants living in makeshift camps in Calais were closed indefinitely at the weekend.
Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol said they are now moving to their next stage of preparing a convoy for the camps.
The group was inundated with donations following shocking images of the refugee crisis moving across Europe.
Four drop-off points were open since the beginning of September and local business have donated a warehouse and transport to the volunteers organising the relief effort.
The group has also raised more than £10,000, used to buy shelters for refugees in Calais which will carry messages of support from Bristol.
“These tents are fully insulated and equipped for winter with flooring, cooking and heating facilities, and water storage, and will be part of 30 shelters that have been financed by different UK groups,” Calais Refugee Solidarity Bristol said.
“In a gesture of welcome and solidarity the tents will be named after the areas that paid for them and we will be personalising the Bristol tents with messages of support.
“However, these tents are just a drop in the ocean and there is still a huge number of vulnerable people without any shelter as winter approaches.
“We will be redoubling our efforts to raise more funds to help more people and to increase the pressure on the authorities to take responsibility for them.
