Rees in New York to help shape next COP agenda

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 24, 2025

Bristol’s former mayor is currently in New York where he has been helping to shape the COP30 agenda as well as talking through the successes of Bristol City Leap.

Marvin Rees, now Lord Rees of Easton, is taking part in Climate Week NYC, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly.

The week’s events will help set the agenda for COP30 which is taking place in Brazil in November.

Writing on LinkedIn, Rees said: “At New York Climate Week, standing at the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the UN with my friend Philip Yang, the COP30 Presidency’s City Envoy.

“We’ve been talking with representatives from the UK Government (DESNZ), as well as leaders of cities and city networks around the world.

“The message is clear: COP30 in Belém must be a COP of cities – because it’s in cities that net zero will ultimately be won or lost.

“That means building a coalition of ambitious, willing partners who are ready to turn ambition into action.

“Cities, investors, national governments, multilaterals and innovators – working together to channel finance, share solutions and drive delivery on the ground.

“The world doesn’t need another declaration of intent. It needs results.

“It’s absolutely essential that this COP delivers – and that’s what we’re working to make happen.

“Great to be working alongside Philip Yang and the COP30 Presidency in shaping that agenda.”
