Police tell protesters that masks to conceal identity will not be allowed

By Martin Booth  Friday Jan 9, 2026

The first major demonstrations of 2026 are due to take place on Saturday morning, with two opposing groups planning to gather near the Cenotaph.

Bristol Patriots are asking their supporters to take part in a rally and march against prime minister Keir Starmer.

Counter-protesters from groups including Bristol Antifascists also oppose many policies introduced by Starmer and the Labour government but claim the Bristol Patriots have called their rally “trying to hide behind the real critiques of Starmer to further their disgusting racist views”.

“The mood has shifted and Bristol is ready for real change,” say the Bristol Patriots.

“If you’re tired of this Labour government, join us this Saturday to make your voice heard. Let’s send a clear message: we want Starmer out.”

In a statement, Avon & Somerset Police say under Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice & Public Order Act 1994, officers will have the power “to direct a person to remove any item which officers believe is being worn to conceal identity”.

Protesters often wear masks so opposing groups will not be able to see their faces which can help prevent doxing.

A dispersal order will also be in place from 8am to 6pm across much of the city centre allowing officers to “instruct individuals to leave a specified area if they are likely to cause harassment, alarm and distress”.

Acting inspector Sean Underwood said: “The policing operation we have in place follows well-rehearsed plans that enable protest to take place lawfully and peacefully, while protecting the interests of the public.

“We will have specialised units deployed and will utilise additional police powers to mitigate against any potential disorder, and we will be in close contact with our partners and stakeholders to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.

“The authorities that have been put in place are designed to ensure anyone who wants to protest is free to do so, but we wish to make it clear to all that we will not accept any form of hate, discrimination, or violence.

“Where anyone breaks the law, officers will take action.”
