Plans for social housing on former builders merchants in south Bristol
The company behind the Carriageworks redevelopment in Stokes Croft has earmarked an empty Bedminster plot for a major new project.
Bosses of The PG Group have revealed early plans for what they are calling “the biggest social housing project to be undertaken by a private developer in the city” on the Sheene Way site that was formerly home to Selco builders merchants.
The developers have exchanged contracts on the site near Lidl, which is currently standing empty and shrouded by tall metal fencing, and hope to build 220 new homes there.
PG is proposing the new development should be owned and operated by a housing association or other registered provider and say they have started to develop early design proposals prior to launching a public consultation on the plans.
There is no information yet on details of the scheme or design.

Dave Gray, PG’s chief operating officer, said the company hopes to start on the site in spring 2023.
“We are all extremely excited about our latest venture which will provide a substantial bank of much needed one, two and three bedroom apartments to rent on the site in Sheene Way,” said Gray.
“Breathing new life into empty or derelict sites in and around the city has always been our mission and the Selco project is a perfect example of this ethos where design and placemaking are always at the heart of any development we undertake.”
As well as the prominent redevelopment of Westmoreland House and the Carriageworks in Stokes Croft, PG was also responsible for redeveloping the former Lewins Mead office block near Broadmead into 148 apartments, offices and a gym, and the St Peter’s Court development in Bedminster, among others.
