Patients and staff evacuated following fire at St Michael’s Hospital

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jan 21, 2021

A small fire that broke out at St Michael’s Hospital led to patients and staff being briefly evacuated.

The blaze started within and was contained to a room with no patients in, and was swiftly dealt with by both hospital staff and the fire brigade.

Nobody was injured and bosses at the Kingsdown hospital confirmed that “at no point was there a threat to patient safety”.

University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust deputy chief executive and chief operating officer, Dr Mark Smith, said: “We can confirm there was a small fire involving an appliance which was contained to a non-patient room at St Michael’s Hospital this afternoon.

“Nobody was injured but as a precaution and in line with our fire safety protocols, staff and patients were evacuated from the building for a short period. At no point was there a threat to patient safety.

“The fire was quickly dealt with and patients have returned to the hospital. We would like to thank our fantastic staff and the emergency services for their swift action to minimise the impact.”

Avon Fire & Rescue were called to the fire soon after midday on Thursday afternoon.

Crews from Bedminster, Southmead, Temple and Kingswood attended the blaze, with four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguish the fire.

The fire was then damped down, with ventilation fans then used to clear smoke from the affected area.

The cause of the fire is thought to be accidental ignition.
