New teen drama series to be filmed in Bristol

By Rachel Morris  Thursday Jan 22, 2015

Hollyoaks writer Marnie Dickens’ new BBC Three drama series is set to film in and around Bristol this summer.

Also known for her work on Fire Horse and Ripper Street, five-part psychological Thirteen is Dickens’ first original series commission.

BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh says: “I’m delighted Thirteen is coming to BBC Three. Marnie Dickens’ script is compelling, a real page-turner, and I’m looking forward to sharing all the plot twists and turns with the BBC Three audience.”

Dickens says: “I’ve always been fascinated by the resilience of the human spirit, in even the most extreme situations, and am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this story to life on the BBC.”

The talented writer has also worked on the popular television series Law and Order: UK, starting out as a floor runner and then earning her stripes as third-assistant director. Now with her first original series to air on BBC Three, she looks firmly set as one to watch.

The Thirteen script is described by Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, as “bold subject matter, a remarkable young point of view”.

The last teen drama to push Bristol to national attention was Skins on Channel 4, which made stars out of Nicholas Holt, Kaya Scodelario and Dev Patel.

Casting for Thirteen is yet to be announced.
