New church opens in Whitchurch
A new worship building and community centre has opened its doors in Whitchurch nearly eight years after the old building was closed. The revamped St Augustine’s Church was closed in 2007, leaving the congregation to worship in nearby Bridge Farm School.
The modern building can be can be clearly seen on the corner of East Dundry Road and Whitchurch Lane by its 6 metre cross, made from the steel girders from the original building.
Member of the congregation and local mum Faye Dicker said: “This is a real good news story. It’s not often you see new churches being built –we’re even more lucky to see one bespoke to families needs.”
For Assistant Curate Rev. Helen Johnson it’s an exciting time: “It has been so exciting to see God’s church alive and kicking in Whitchurch. We can’t wait to fling open the doors to the new church building so that we are able to welcome even more people, and do great things in and with our local community, not just on Sunday but every day. To use a well-known phrase ‘Jesus is for life, not just for Christmas’.”
