New Bristol Monopoly board revealed
Clifton Suspension Bridge is Mayfair and College Green is Old Kent Road on the new Bristol Monopoly board.
Its official launch on Thursday comes more than 20 years after the previous Bristol edition of the world famous board game which featured a combination of Anchor Road and the former At-Bristol as the most prestigious property, and Temple Street as the cheapest.
More than 30 Bristol landmarks from Park Street to the Fleece feature on the new board, with Bristol24/7 honoured to be included as one of the Community Chest squares.
is needed now More than ever
Among several anomalies in the new Bristol Monopoly, Ashton Gate is featured on the Park Lane square but there is no space for the Memorial Stadium on the board despite inclusions for non-league Bristol Manor Farm who play in Sea Mills.
Clifton also features prominently with ‘Clifton Downs’, Queen’s Road, Clifton Arcade, Clifton College and the Suspension Bridge; more squares in total as for the entirety of south Bristol which is represented by the Imperial Sports Ground and Bristol Blue Glass in Brislington, Cameron Balloons in Bedminster, and Ashton Gate.
Spare a thought for east Bristol meanwhile, which has been completely ignored.
Following a public vote, the Grand Appeal, Bristol Animal Rescue Centre and Empire Fighting Chance are also dotted around the board, alongside businesses who have paid to be featured including Hargreaves Lansdown and OVO Energy.
Among several of the customised Chance cards, one fines players for driving at more than 20mph in the city centre while another provides a scholarship to the University of Bristol.
“This is a new game for a new generation,” says John Keen-Tomlinson, custom games executive at Winning Moves UK, who produce official versions of Monopoly across the world.
“The response from the public has been overwhelming. A very big thank you to everyone who sent in nominations.
“Clifton Suspension Bridge is ‘Mayfair’ by popular demand. It appeared in the 2000 edition game but not as prominently. This time around the message from the public was loud and clear: ‘It must be Mayfair!’
“As for College Green’s position in the game, it dates back to medieval times so it’s very fitting to replace ‘Old Kent Road’ with it. It’s also very high profile – just like Monopoly’s most affordable square.”
