Most complex and detailed Gromit Unleashed sculptures revealed

By Niamh Walton  Monday Jun 11, 2018

Bristol’s world class engineering skills are being showcased in three unique sculptures as part of this summer’s Gromit Unleashed 2 trail.

One sculpture is made up of intricate parts usually found in a watch, one has a wagging tail and one can even hover.

The Grand Appeal director Nicola Masters said: “Watching Gromitronic, Gromjet and A Grand Gromplication slowly come to life over the last six months has been the most exciting wait of our lives!

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“We are absolutely delighted with the incredible results and are so grateful to every single person involved for helping us take Gromit Unleashed 2 into totally new territory.”

“To quote a certain inventor, ‘We’ve tested this on Gromit – haven’t we lad?'”

A Grand Gromplication

A Grand Gromplication was designed and produced by three second-year engineering students at the University of Bristol – Christine Braganza, Ella Allan and Octavia Clark – after their design won a competition by the faculty of engineering. Inspired by steampunk culture and its connection with gears and cogs, the students spent more than 350 hours installing more than 700 cogs on Gromit, using a range of engineering techniques such as computer aided design, 3D Printing, gear ratios and soldering.

Gromjet

Gromjet, brought to life by the team at Rolls-Royce, aims to recognise the importance of engineering and aviation in Bristol’s past, present and future. Using the same technology reserved for its Pegasus engine on the Harrier and the LiftSystem on the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter, the engineering team behind Gromjet also equipped him with hybrid-electric engines which allow him to hover one metre off the ground.

Gromitronic

Combining multiple technologies including mechanical engineering, electronics, software and metal 3D printing, Gromitronic has been designed and built by a young team of Renishaw engineers who hope to bring fun, interactivity and education to the trail. From the tip of its plasma ball nose to its wagging tail, Gromitronic is packed full of features. Look closely at the collar and you may also recognise a few Bristol landmarks – all 3D printed in miniature.

Led by Bristol Children’s Hospital charity The Grand Appeal, Gromit Unleashed 2 will see Gromit return to the streets of Bristol alongside Wallace and Feathers McGraw from July 2 to September 2 2018. For more information, visit www.gromitunleashed.org.uk.
