Kill the Bill protest outside BBC Bristol leads to one arrest

By Charlie Watts  Thursday Apr 8, 2021

A Kill the Bill protest outside the front on BBC Bristol in Clifton has led to one man being arrested.

About 50 people took part in a peaceful sit-down protest in Whiteladies Road on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in part of the road being closed and buses being diverted.

As protesters gathered, they chanted “What’s the tea, BBC?” Some used chalk to draw on the pavement outside the BBC premises, including the word “liars” with an arrow pointing to the direction of the building. Others approached the entrance to the building, knocking on the door of it.

Only one of the protesters was arrested, after he appeared to urinate in the grounds of BBC Bristol.

This was the sixth Kill the Bill protest in recent weeks, and this time the demonstrators were making a stand against the ‘biased reporting’ of their antics.

Police officers were present at the sit-down protest, which lasted for about an hour.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said on Wednesday: “About 50 people have tonight gathered for a sit-in protest in Whiteladies Road, Bristol.

“Officers are engaging with those involved. Our aim is to facilitate a peaceful protest.”

The protesters had initially met at College Green, before marching to the BBC Studios, chanting “Whose streets? Our streets!” along the way.

After blocking Whiteladies Road for about an an hour, the police asked the protesters to leave. The demonstrators then made their way back through the city centre to College Green, before dispersing again.
