Horfield Primary backs Colston Hall campaign

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Feb 24, 2016

Horfield Primary School has become the first school in Bristol to publicly back Bristol Music Trust’s 45k for £45m campaign to show community support for the Colston Hall’s transformation.

Bristol Plays Music is the UK’s only education music hub based at a professional performance venue.

The £45 million transformation of the Colston Hall will provide new classrooms and a music technology lab, which will become part of a new world-class learning centre.

Around 15,000 school children from 130 schools and adults from all backgrounds and abilities will have the opportunity to fulfil their music potential every year

Horfield Primary music teacher Kirsten Graham said: “The transformation of Colston Hall will be a massive benefit to our school, having world-class music education facilities on the doorstep will be fantastic for any aspiring musicians at Horfield School and the improved Hall will offer an experience unrivalled by any in the south west for our pupils.”

Bristol Music Trust chief executive Louise Mitchell added: “We’ve had a positive response from local schools for our plans. Head teachers and music leaders appreciate how their pupils will enjoy top class education facilities.

“The staff at Bristol Plays Music work hard alongside schools to inspire young people to develop their music talents. But our facilities are outdated. Bristol’s children deserve better than dark, dank underground education facilities that are inaccessible for disabled children. We can do much better.

“Our transformation will support our staff to deliver music education excellence for all.”

The new facilities at the Colston Hall will also host more than 30 music projects, like Bristol Sings Music and the Remix Learning programme.

Bristol Music Trust is on the way to raising its £45 million investment target. Commitments from Bristol City Council (£10m) and the Government (£5m) total £15 million. Arts Council England have also made £10 million available for the project, subject to a second round of assessment of the Trust’s bid.
