Gargan lands new G4S job

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Dec 2, 2015

Former chief constable at Avon and Somerset police Nick Gargan has taken up a new role at private security firm G4S following his resignation on the back of misconduct charges.

Gargan will take up a four-month contract at G4S, controversial for its handling of the London 2012 Olympics, as a programme director reviewing contracts.

Gargan was asked to resign by police and crime commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens after being found guilty of misconduct in office, including storing indecent images on his work mobile phone.

He quit his £175,000 job in October, following a £580,000 investigation which included the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

On his new appointment Mr Gargan said: “Like many people who leave the police service, I have some years left before reaching retirement and I want to continue to make use of my experience and skills.

“Public services face complex challenges and after taking the decision to resign after twenty-seven years in policing. I am pleased to be able to continue to play a part in working to improve service delivery to the public while securing efficiencies for taxpayers.”

Regional human resources director for G4S in the UK and Ireland, Victoria Woodison, said: “We are focused on providing the most technically advanced, flexible and efficient services in criminal justice settings and Nick Gargan’s insight and experience will help us support police forces to meet the complex and dynamic challenges they face.”

Avon and Somerset police said interviews for the new chief constable will begin next week. Conservative Party candidate for the PCC role, Mark Weston, has called for the process to be halted.
