Gallery: Balmoral sets sail for dry dock

By Bristol24/7  Monday Apr 13, 2015

Another piece in Bristol’s rich maritime history is the Balmoral; built in 1949, the ship is a member of the National Historic Fleet and officially recognised as a ship of national historic importance.

The vintage ship was taken out of service in 2012 and has remained docked outside M Shed since, in need of some TLC.

Earlier this year, however, it was announced that the Balmoral would receive a government grant of £344,000 from the Coastal Communities Fund to get help get the historic ship back into service.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The Balmoral is expected to be back in operation this June; and on Sunday morning, began her journey to the dry dock in Sharpness on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire, where repairs can begin.
