Fruit Market sale could eventually see new Bristol Rovers stadium on site

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Dec 1, 2021

Singing of Goodnight Irene will not be heard in St Philip’s Marsh for a number of years yet, but Bristol Rovers are now closer than ever before to moving to a new stadium.

The Bristol Post is reporting that a sale has been agreed for Bristol Fruit Market and could soon be confirmed.

The new Rovers stadium could be built on the 11-acre site alongside flats, restaurants and other entertainment venues.

A 20,000-capacity stadium would see Rovers move from the Memorial Stadium in Horfield where the club has been based since 1996.

It is understood that homes could be built on the Mem site by the same developer behind the proposed fruit market development.

The new stadium would be based only just north of the River Avon off Albert Road which borders the Bristol Temple Quarter Enterprise Zone.

Rovers president Wael Al-Qadi first mentioned the club’s ambition to build a new stadium on the fruit market site in August 2019, telling BBC Radio Bristol that “it’s a very long process and there’s a lot of technical work that has to be done to get approval”.
