From 17th century gem to student house
Work has begun to transform The Manor House, a Grade II listed property behind St Michael’s Hill, into student housing.
Originally built as a family home in 1691, the building is to be converted into 12 studio and one-bedroom apartments, with an additional six apartments in a new on site building.
Bristol-based developer Urban Creation, who is behind the project, bought the empty building last year from Bristol Charities – a charity who provides housing and assistance for the elderly – after the tenants had moved out.
The building was last renovated in 1980, after a fire destroyed its interior.
Jonathan Brecknell, director at Urban Creation, said the property is perfect for students: “It’s right next to the University of Bristol’s main campus and medical school in a quiet, secluded spot while also being a stone’s throw from the cultural and leisure hub of the city.”
Work on the site is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017.
