Former Lib Dem mayoral candidate joins Green Party

By Martin Booth  Friday May 5, 2023

Mary Page was the original Lib Dem candidate for the last Bristol mayoral election, before stepping down and later playing a leading role in the successful campaign to scrap the mayoral model.

She has now jumped ship from the Lib Dems to join the Green Party, pledging to help the Greens win a majority of seats at City Hall in 2024.

The former journalist, who spent seven years at the National Composites Centre in Emersons Green, urged her followers on social media to vote Green in Thursday’s local elections.

Writing on Facebook on Thursday morning, Page said: “We have run out of time. Climate change happening across the world is causing environmental species and habitat loss on a devastating scale.

“I have finally made the decision to join Green Party of England and Wales.

“If you want to send a message to the Conservative government that they’re failing us, or let Labour know they’re not prioritising the right things environmentally, or if you want to make change happen today here in the West Country your best bet is to #VoteGreen.”

Page added: “I spent on and off 20 years trying to make the LDs more Green but now it’s time to work towards the local elections in Bristol 2024 where I hope Bristol Green Party will win a majority of seats.

“That will mean we can send a message loud and clear to Labour here that they need to do more environmentally, that whilst they have turned a blind eye to their mayor tearing down trees across the city, we have been watching and it needs to stop!”
