Filton Leisure Centre to reopen under temporary operators following shock closure

By Kyra McClarnon  Wednesday Apr 16, 2025

Filton Town Council have announced that Filton Leisure Centre will be renamed Elm Park Leisure Centre.

The operation of the site has been temporarily transferred to Elm Park Leisure, a community interest company that is “currently in the process of being formed” according to the council.

The council are set to work in partnership with charity Circadian Trust, who currently manage leisure centres in Bradley Stoke, Kingswood and Longwell Green.

The town council say they will be launching a formal tender process to secure a long term provider for the leisure centre soon, and aim to have a contract in place by the end of the year.

Despite this, the leisure centre remains closed until further notice.

Filton Leisure Centre was previously operated by Warwickshire-based charity Active Nation, who closed the site on April 3, citing ongoing financial losses and pressure from rising energy bills.

In response to the announcement, there has been concern online among users of the leisure centre about what will happen to their prepaid memberships, and whether they will receive refunds for the money they’ve spent.

Filton Leisure Centre offered a range of cardio and strength equipment as well as much-used swimming facilities

Replying to the statement posted by Filton Town Council, Facebook user Lauren Kate Wills said: “Can I confirm that I’ve read this right please? This means that any membership held with Active Nation will not be transferred to the new leisure centre provider?”

Facebook user Lee Palmer told other members in the group “cancel with your bank, you ain’t getting back any money already paid out”.

There were mixed reports in the group of users receiving refunds for their memberships.

Filton Town Council say they “remain fully committed to restoring leisure services for our community” and are “grateful” for “continued patience”

Filton Town Council has encouraged those who hold ongoing or prepaid memberships with Active Nation to contact their bank for support or attend free Citizens Advice sessions, which will be held between 2 to 4pm and 5 to 7pm on Thursday. The location of the sessions is yet to be confirmed by the council.
